"Once Upon a Time..." My book of that title has been published. It was released by the publisher in November at a meeting of ISCE principals. Principals present then had access to copies. The subtitle of the book is A Memoir of an American Jesuit in India. It contains reminiscences of Loyola Shool, Jamshedpur, De Nobili schools, etc.

The publisher has reprinted it in a hard cover edition. That became available in mid-February.

The publisher is Jay Cee Publications Pvt Ltd. ., AIMO House, 1E/11 Jhandewalan Extension, New Delhi 110055. Phone 91-11-23552591, 91-11-23552591. email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

It is priced at Rs 500/- but the publisher has agreed to sell it at Rs 250/-

Fr Hess' application for extension of visa rejected

This morning I have had unsettling news. My application for extension of my residential visa after December 10, 2009 has been rejected with instructions to apply once more within the terms of my new entry visa which is valid until May 12, 2010.

It is frustrating after more than 57 years spent in India that a seemingly unhelpful reply is received. And, I had tried more than once to institute an application for Indian citizenship.

It was through Nobilians Feroze Ahmed and Jawed Ashraf that I was able to get a new visa to come back to India. I welcome help. It may come from unexpected sources.

I trust in the Lord,

God's blessings

Fr Hess: A NOBLE OFFER TO YOU

Dear Nobilian

The new principal of De Nobili School, Fr. Saby (Sebastian) Puthenpura, S.J. fresh from completing an M.A. in Education in New York and with extensive previous experience is determined to add to the luster of De Nobili not only district-wise but nationally.

He has ideas, freshness of vision and energy. Funds also are needed. You (many at least) have money which can provide the additional engine for new times and new advances. My trust is that you also realize that what you received in your school days was not what you paid for but much, much more. As your parents extended themselves to put you on the road to success in life, so also did De Nobili extend itself beyond their contribution.

Fr Hess: Rising cost of education

Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail
Fr George Hess Saturday, 11 July 2009 04:39

The cost of everything from rice to writing paper has increased exponentially these days. The cost of education also has increased both for parents and for the teachers who educate their children.

De Nobili School is aware of rising costs and it is doing its best both to spare parents and to enable its teachers to meet their expenses. The education delivered by De Nobili is among the best in India and in fact in the world, as it borne out by the success of its alumni here and abroad.

The quality of that education is more than the costs to parents. The school is aware of the problems that all face in today's economy, and it is doing its best to avoid adding to problems.

Many of the older alumni of De Nobili are in positions of influence and success, due to the efforts of their parents in yester years; and they are now supports to their parents. They do not estimate the efforts parents put into their education as only what was due from them.

Equally I suggest that they do not today estimate the pains and expenses of the school as being only what the institution and their teachers were paid for. Alumni can show their gratitude to their school as they show their gratitude to their parents, by helping in the school's current trials and by donations to help the present generation of students. Several have done so in very generous ways. More is needed and can be done.

God's blessings on the cheerful giver.

Fr GA Hess SJMy brief visit to the States lengthened because of a temporary medical treatment, which resulted in a need for a new visa. I am working on that with the help of several Nobilians. India is my home.
