Maken is the Government of India’s minister in charge of Jharkhand and had come to Dhanbad for a rally. He expressed a wish to visit his alma mater, where he studied from 1969-1972.
The school felicitated him at a programme at the junior section in the presence of the whole school. He was presented with a bouquet, a shawl, the golden jubilee publication and the school annual in which his class photo appears. Copies of his class photos for the other two years of his studies at DNS were also presented.
“He was relaxed, reminisced of his school days and the school play where he was dressed in a sari,” Fr Hess told DeNobili.edu.in.
Fr Principal welcomed the minister and read out the Memorandum signed by the three local school principals urging for immediate repair of the Jharia-Digwadih road. He promised to do something. He was also presented with a copy of Rajat Bhatia's book on Fr Hess and De Nobili. He joined the Jesuits for a cup of tea later.
His family had been in the coal business and left after coal mines nationalisation. After DNS, he joined St Xavier's New Delhi to continue with his education. Maken represents New Delhi constituency in the Lok Sabha.
